ABSTRACT:
The rapid digital transformation of India’s healthcare system has significantly influenced pharmaceutical service delivery through online pharmacies (e-pharmacies). These platforms provide convenient access to medicines, healthcare products, teleconsultation services, prescription management, and home delivery. The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the adoption of online pharmacies, making them an integral component of healthcare accessibility, particularly in urban and semi-urban regions. Despite their growing popularity, concerns regarding regulatory compliance, counterfeit medicines, prescription verification, patient privacy, and irrational drug use remain major challenges. The absence of a dedicated legal framework specifically governing e-pharmacies has further complicated their operation. This review discusses the evolution of online pharmacies in India, regulatory aspects, market trends, advantages, challenges, ethical considerations, technological innovations, and future prospects. The article also highlights policy recommendations necessary to ensure safe, affordable, and accessible pharmaceutical services in the digital era.
