ABSTRACT:
Understanding English poetry necessitates an intricate approach that comprises various key focus areas. This article aims to explore these key focus areas through a comprehensive review of the existing literature on English poetry. The study was grounded in an exploratory research design, which employed the instances of the focus areas discerned in the poetic texts as primary data and the views of previous authors and researchers regarding the areas as secondary data. The secondary data were taken from the related books, and scholarly journal articles. The data were critically analyzed. The research study identifies epigraph, title, speaker, tone, setting, specific diction, figurative language, sound devices, form and structure, theme and motif, historical and cultural context, and epitaph as the key focus areas for understanding English poetry. By highlighting these key focus areas, the article aims to equip readers with the tools necessary to engage with English poetry on a deeper level, fostering both analytical skills and personal connection. This holistic approach not only aids in academic study but also enhances the enjoyment and appreciation of poetry as an art form.
