ABSTRACT:

The right to life is widely acknowledged as a fundamental right in every legal system. In certain jurisdictions, this right is absolute, while in others, including Nigeria, it is subject to limitations. One such restriction to the right to life in Nigeria is the death penalty, which has been the focus of much discussion among academics, jurists, lawyers, criminologists, and sociologists over the years. The death penalty is the punishment that a court of competent jurisdiction can impose on a convicted felon. Over the past forty years, international criminal law has been shifting against the death penalty in the fields of criminal justice and human rights worldwide. The legal and judicial framework for the administration of criminal justice in Nigeria still recognizes and imposes the death penalty, despite the fact that this practice has been abolished in many industrialized and developing nations worldwide. However, the death penalty is controversial in Nigeria, as it is in various other nations, even if it is recognized under Nigerian law. While some groups in Nigeria are advocating for the abolition of the death penalty as a form of punishment for certain capital offences, such as treason, armed robbery, and murder, others support its use for the same reasons. In light of the current controversy over the death penalty’s repeal or continuation in Nigeria, this work explores the concept, weighs the arguments for and against its use, and concludes by suggesting a workable course of action.

Key words: Human rights, Deterrence, Death penalty, Capital offence, and Capital punishment.

ABSTRACT:

Diabetes mellitus (DM) has emerged as one of the most challenging chronic diseases of the 21st century, affecting hundreds of millions of people globally. Its prevalence continues to rise due to lifestyle transitions, urbanization, and population ageing. Diabetes contributes significantly to morbidity, mortality, and healthcare expenditure worldwide. Type 2 diabetes (T2D) represents about 90โ€“95% of all cases, driven by insulin resistance and ฮฒ-cell dysfunction. In recent years, major therapeutic advances have reshaped management, particularly with sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitors, glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists, and the dual glucose-dependent insulinotropic peptide (GIP)/GLP-1 receptor agonist tirzepatide. These agents not only control glycaemia but also offer cardiovascular and renal protection. Despite these advances, global disparities in diagnosis, access to care, and affordability persist, especially in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). This review summarizes the global epidemiology, pathophysiology, and evolving therapeutic strategies in diabetes, highlighting contemporary clinical trials, outcome data, and future priorities for reducing its global burden.ย

ABSTRACT:

This paper examines the thematic concerns that arise from linguistic errors found in public signage. Essentially, it seeks to analyse the veiled emerging and topical issues surrounding the author which makes him/her commit such linguistic blunders in their signage that subsequently interfere with the entire communication process. There is some concern as to why authors make linguistic errors in their signage; but it has not been considered from the perspective of the public signage themselves. Therefore, this paper scrutinises the public signage in an attempt to identify some of these elusive concerns. To assist in this analysis, the Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) as propounded by Halliday (1994) is applied to twenty-three public signage collected from around the country on both on-line and off-line platform. The sampling procedure was purposefully selected to cover various parts of the country catering for their unique people and features. It was important to select only those public signage which contained linguistic errors which reflected emerging themes found in the society. Tabular representation was used to portray the relationship of various components of societal commentary present in the respective signage. The study sought to enhance specific areas of linguistics by identifying fundamental aspects therein including the relationship between language, society and culture. Similarly, the education sector would greatly benefit by reviewing language competence and performance tasks in students to avoid such linguistic errors in future.

Key terms: Context/sociolinguistic situation/ setting: environment surrounding the author of the public notices Discourse analysis: to determine meaning through text and context analysis Linguistic errors: mistakes associated with language performance Linguistic Competence: proper knowledge of rules and grammar of language Linguistic Performance: proper usage of language through writing Linguistic landscape: environment including public notices Public Notices: messages hang, printed or printed for purposes of public consumption Social Commentary/thematic concerns/ topical issues: topics emanating from the society about lifestyle of the citizens

๐Ÿ“˜ : Nexus Global Research Journal of Multidisciplinary (NGRJM) Volume -1, Issue -5, 2025, Page : 289 – 304

ABSTRACT:

Occupational risk exposure among police personnel has emerged as a critical concern in contemporary organizational and security studies. This paper theoretically examines how workplace factors shape the patterns and intensity of occupational risks faced by police officers in Nigeria. Drawing on insights from occupational sociology and organizational behaviour, the paper argues that factors such as inadequate infrastructure, poor safety culture, excessive workload, limited training opportunities, and weak institutional support significantly increase officersโ€™ vulnerability to physical, psychological, and operational hazards. The analysis adopts a theoretical lens that situates policing within a high-risk occupational environment, where systemic and managerial shortcomings intensify exposure to danger. It contends that improving workplace conditions through effective management practices, structured safety policies, and organizational reforms can substantially mitigate these risks. The paper concludes that understanding workplace determinants is essential not only for enhancing police wellbeing and performance but also for strengthening institutional efficiency and public safety outcomes in Nigeria.

ABSTRACT:

This paper investigates redundancy and retrenchment in Nigeriaโ€™s public sector, drawing on evidence from Ministries, Departments, and Agencies in Gombe State. Grounded in labour process theory and the political economy of work, it argues that workforce reductions are shaped by institutional inefficiencies, neoliberal reforms, and fiscal austerity. Rather than purely economic decisions, these practices reflect shifting state priorities and power asymmetries. Redundancy policies often exacerbate inequality, weaken employment security, and erode worker identity. The paper advocates for socially responsive employment frameworks that reconcile organizational efficiency with equity, worker protection, and the broader goals of decent work in developing economies.

INTRODUCTION:

The field of civil engineering has long wrestled with the persistent challenge of steel reinforced concrete (RC) corrosion, a phenomenon that compromises structural integrity, safety, and economic sustainability. Corrosion of steel reinforcement is influenced by a complex interplay of factors, including environmental conditions, concrete quality, chemical composition, and load stresses. Traditional methods of studying and predicting corrosion, such as empirical models and experimental testing, often involve lengthy laboratory procedures and substantial financial investment. In recent years, however, the emergence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has transformed the landscape of research, offering powerful tools for prediction, monitoring, and mitigation of RC corrosion at a global scale.
